Hi Rohan! It is a great honour to talk to you! How would you present Rohan Marley to people who still don’t know who he is?
I am the Chairman and Founder of Marley Coffee.
I also work with House of Marley and Marley Beverage.
I am a spiritual man, and a father.

Your father Bob Marley and some of your brothers are musicians, whereas you have the green thumb. How was Marley Coffee born? How did you begin this adventure?
I wouldn’t say I didn’t have an interest for music, but I did inherit my father’s entrepreneurial spirit.
I bought the farm in Jamaica in 1999 because it was such a beautiful piece of land and I could help create jobs in Jamaica; it was only later I learned we produced coffee that I started learning the coffee business. I spent time living in Ethiopia in 2006 learning about the roots of coffee and Ethiopia as the cradle of civilization, and it inspired me to turn Marley Coffee into a global coffee company.
A proposito di padri, Bob Marley e alcuni dei tuoi fratelli sono diventati musicisti, come mai tu hai sviluppato il pollice verde? Com’è iniziata la grande avventura del Marley Coffee?
Non direi che non nutrivo interesse per la musica, ma ho ereditato lo spirito imprenditoriale di mio padre.
Ho comprato la farm in Giamaica nel 1999 innamorandomi del luogo, grazie al quale avrei aiutato un sacco di persone a trovare lavoro. All’epoca non avevo ancora imparato a produrre caffè e a conoscerne il mercato. Nel 2006 quando vivevo in Etiopia ho studiato e scoperto le origini del caffè e l’Etiopia stessa come culla della civilizzazione.
È stata questa esperienza a ispirarmi per trasformare la Marley Coffee in un’azienda globale.
Since the 19th century, coffee has been one of the biggest symbols of slavery. In the history of mankind your father Bob Marley has been one of the people who most fought for equal rise and justice against slavery, racism, wars. Do you think that now Marley Coffee can be something more than a cup of coffee and be also a vehicle to promote these values?
Absolutely.
The coffee farm supports many jobs for women in the coffee processing plant in Kingston, and we ensure that all the farmers that work our land are paid fairly and treated well. Our farm also supports the sustainability movement – we were one of the first certified organic coffee farms in Jamaica.
That’s incredibly important to me, to protect the earth, and the health of our farmers by not using any pesticides.
We’re also debuting “EcoCup” single serve capsules, which will drastically cut down waste since they will be the first easy-to-recycle capsules on the market.
The Water Wise Coffee Project is another sustainability project I’m passionate about – 1 cent of every Marley Coffee capsule sold goes to fund this project that improves the water quality for the people living in the Sidama region of Ethiopia.
Sin dal 19º secolo il caffè ha rappresentato uno dei più grandi simboli della schiavitù. Tuo padre è storicamente riconosciuto come uno dei più grandi lottatori per la conquista dei diritti umani, combattendo la schiavitù, il razzismo e le guerre. Pensi che adesso la Marley Coffee possa rappresentare più di una tazzina di caffè? Può anche essere un veicolo per promuovere questi valori
Assolutamente sì.
La nostra azienda ha procurato molti impieghi nelle piantagioni di caffè a Kingston e il mio primo obiettivo è assicurarmi che tutti vengano trattati bene e regolarmente. La farm supporta anche il movimento per la sostenibilità – siamo uno dei primi organi certificati in Giamaica.
Per me è importantissimo proteggere la terra e la salute dei nostri impiegati non ricorrendo ad alcun pesticida.
A breve debutteremo con le capsule monodose “Ecocup” che ridurranno sensibilmente lo spreco, rappresentando sul mercato le prime capsule facile da riciclare.
Anche il Water Wise Coffee Project è un progetto dedicato al tema della sostenibilità a cui aderiamo – un centesimo speso per ogni capsula del Marley Coffee viene donato a questo fondo che aiuta a preservare la qualità dell’acqua per le persone che vivono a Sidama, una regione dell’Etiopia.
On August 6, Jamaica celebrated 53 years of Independence. Your brother Damian Marley in his tune “Independence” (part of Set Up Shop Vol.1 released by Ghetto Youths Intl.) sings “Are we independent? It depends, On what yuh call independence”. So, how do you see Jamaica nowadays? What’s your feeling upon the situation of your country?
Jamaica is a beautiful country that’s constantly evolving and ripe with opportunity. Marley Coffee gives back to a school that’s very close to the farm called Chepstowe. We were able to buy them new text books, playground, and a computer lab.
When given the opportunity the youth will flourish.

Tuo fratello Damian Marley nella canzone Indipendence (contenuta nel Set Up Shop Vol.1 rilasciata da Ghetto Youths Intl.) canta “Siamo indipendenti? Dipende da ciò che tu chiami indipendenza”. Come vedi la Giamaica oggi? Qual è la tua previsione sul tuo paese?
La Giamaica è un paese stupendo, in continua evoluzione e pieno di opportunità. La Marley Coffee si affaccia sulla scuola Chepstowe, per cui riusciamo a comprare libri nuovi, giocattoli e computer.
