Arabica coffee futures closed higher Friday as specs continued to cover short positions.
The active contract for July delivery gained 145 points to settle at 140.90 cents a pound.
The raise of the reference minimum price in Brazil remained under discussion by the ministries of agriculture and finance. Early news cables informed of an increase of 17%; however the news was denied by officials later in the morning.

The minimum reference price is a parameter that the government uses when it intervenes in the coffee market; in order of designing financing programs or buying schemes.
According with some sources in Brazil, the ministry of finance is looking for a level of 304 reals; while the ministry of agriculture maintains 340 reals as a more fair level.
Coffee prices were helped by constructive US economic data
Regarding the unemployment rate that contracted to 7.5 %, the lowest level since December 2008. During the week, Arabica prices recovered 6.95 cents or 5.18%.
A massive short covering evidenced by a sharp decline of the open interest was encouraged by weather news and expectation;s that the Brazilian government would revise its reference price for coffee higher.
The open interest declined 6,218 to 160,769 lot
A cold front that will reach Parana and Sao Paulo is expected to lower temps to above 6 C. but no damage or frost is forecasted.
In London, the Robusta market closed unchanged. The main activity was related to arbitrages and spreads trading.
The volume declined slightly to 10,017 from 10,908 the previous session. During the week, Robusta prices advanced $13 per ton or 0.6%.
The market was marginally influenced by the New York action. The arbitrage for September continued to widen; ending at $0.502 from $0.443 last Friday.
The nearby July-September structure attracted good volume; ending at -$26 from -$20 the previous week.
